What is a canine team? 

Dogs have such a keen sense of smell (30 to 40 times better than that of Humans) that it is easy for them to detect certain smells, in particular traces of explosives. This is why canine teams are used to provide extra security in airport areas. The security officer and their EDD (Explosive Detection Dog) are highly sought after given the dog's incomparable performance.

As a reminder, canine teams use two techniques:

  • free-running, which is the classical solution where the dog is sent directly to the site to screen the areas to be checked with their handler.
  • Odourology (or the science of smells), which refers to a highly-effective, innovative technique where the dog analyses different samples of smells contained in jars in a room by itself. An officer will have collected samples of air from the area to be screened beforehand (e.g. sample from the trailer of a truck for checking air cargo).
